Massachusetts and Rhode Island are the two states that are leading the way in supporting the creation of an offshore wind farm in the Atlantic Ocean. Boston-based company Energy Management is finalizing financing for its 130-turbine Cape Wind proposal in Nantucket Sound and plans to start installation next year.
There are about 1.5 million acres off the Atlantic Coast specifically designated for offshore wind power, it is estimated that it could generate as much as 16,000 megawatts of electricity! That’s enough to power more than 5 million homes.
“American offshore wind power is finally within reach,” Catherine Bowes, senior manager for climate and energy at the National Wildlife Federation, said in a statement.
