New offshore leases could “power half the homes in MA”

Offshore of Massachusetts, there is about 742,000 acres that will be offered for commercial wind energy development.  The area goes on a competitive lease sale one January 29th.

The US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory estimated that if this area was fully developed, it would be big enough to produce 4 to 5 GW of commercial wind generated power.  That’s enough to power over 1.4 million homes.

“This offshore wind energy area not only has the capacity to generate enough electricity to power half the homes in Massachusetts, but it will also create local jobs and a renewable and home-grown source of power,” according to Governor Deval Patrick.

This would be a great way to combat the price increases in electricity that we have seen recently.
